Getting Started: A Typical Approach to Benchmarking

Traditional benchmarking approaches involve a large amount of time and resources.  Steps include:

  1. Identify performance metrics, practices and processes to benchmark
  2. Select a benchmarking project team (internal and external)
  3. Identify companies to benchmark against
  4. Evaluate various data collection methods.  Select the most appropriate methodology
  5. Approach potential benchmarking partners to participate
  6. Design the research questionnaire.  Ensure questions are clear and unambiguous
  7. Plan and conduct qualitative and quantitative data collection with partner companies
  8. Analyze and prepare research report.  Present data results both textually and graphically
  9. Present research findings to the management team and key stakeholders
  10. Establish an action plan that addresses high priority areas of concern.
